«I loved how she looked at him totally submissive.»
Sociocultural phenomena, such as exogamy or phylopatry, can largely determine human sex-specific demography. In Central Africa, diverging patterns of sex-specific genetic variation have been observed between mobile hunter—gatherer Pygmies and sedentary agricultural non-Pygmies. However, their sex-specific demography remains largely unknown. Using population genetics and approximate Bayesian computation approaches, we inferred male and female effective population sizes, sex-specific migration, and admixture rates in 23 Central African Pygmy and non-Pygmy populations, genotyped for autosomal, X-linked, Y-linked, and mitochondrial markers. We found much larger effective population sizes and migration rates among non-Pygmy populations than among Pygmies, in agreement with the recent expansions and migrations of non-Pygmies and, conversely, the isolation and stationary demography of Pygmy groups. We found larger effective sizes and migration rates for males than for females for Pygmies, and vice versa for non-Pygmies.

They are divided into three roughly geographic groups:. They are notable for, and named for, their short stature described as " pygmyism " in anthropological literature. They are assumed to be descended from the original Middle Stone Age expansion of anatomically modern humans to Central Africa, albeit substantially affected by later migrations from West Africa, from their first appearance in the historical record in the 19th century limited to a comparative small area within Central Africa, greatly decimated by the prehistoric Bantu expansion , and to the present time widely affected by enslavement and cannibalism at the hands of neighboring Bantu groups. Most contemporary Pygmy groups are only partially foragers and partially trade with neighbouring farmers to acquire cultivated foods and other material items; no group lives deep in the forest without access to agricultural products. The use of "Pygmy" in reference to the small-framed African hunter-gatherers dates to the early 19th century, in English first by John Barrow, Travels Into the Interior of Southern Africa However, the term was used diffusely, and treated as unsubstantiated claims of "dwarf tribes" among the Bushmen of the interior of Africa, until the exploration of the Congo basin of the s. THE deafening explosion of a shotgun is followed by a thud as a small black monkey falls out of the tree and onto the floor. Hunter Bosco is delighted - his catch means his tribe will eat tonight - and the distraught baby primate that is screaming and clinging to its dead mother's back will only provide more meat for the stew. This is a normal day in the lives of the pygmy tribe, who live a secret existence in the rain forests of the Congo. The tribe - a group native to Central Africa - are distinguished by their sawed-off teeth, and live on a diet of hand-caught caterpillars and monkeys. They believe in witchcraft, and even blame the death of a young mum on rumours she'd had sex with her brother-in-law, who had cursed her after the act.
